Summer Camp 2013

Camp Monticello 1st-2nd grade

SESSION 1 (June 17th – June 28th): ADVENTURE CAMP

Within these two weeks, we have broken it down into two separate weeks: exploring nature one week and learning camping skills the next. Each day will be a new theme that evolves around the concept of being adventurous and daring. Students endure from nature walks with creek exploration to learning about survival skills such as building shelters, cooking, and building fires. To make their adventure an enriched learning experience, they will embark upon various field trips that relate to the theme for the week. The adventure begins here!

SESSION 2 (July 1st – July 12th: School Closed on July 4th/5th): OUTDOOR GAME CAMP

No electronics! Back to basic traditional outdoor and indoor games! For these two weeks, the students will learn that we can still have fun without any modern technology. Students will engage in an old fashion traditional game, such as kickball, relay races, scavenger hunt, ball day, hiking, rock climbing, and water play. All these games and activities will create lasting memories that they can pass onto their own family in the future. Let’s forget the electronics and have some real fun in the sun!

SESSION 3 (July 15th – July 26th): MAD SCIENCE CAMP

As children our mind is full of the "WHY" questions. We go through life full of curiosity, wondering why do we have solar systems, why is it important to go green, or why do we need the five senses. Each day of these two weeks will be filled with the 5 W’s – who, what, where, when, and why. Through these questions, students will use their imagination to create, build, explore, and learn about their world and surrounding within their environment. Visitors from Mad Science will come to work with them for a day as well as them roaming within our community at the Chabot Space Center and Exploratorium to learn about space and simple machineries. By the end of the two week session, many students will want to be a scientist when they grow up!

SESSION 4 (July 29th – August 9th): ARTS/CRAFTS GALORE

Creative minds at work are what we called this two weeks of arts and craft galore. Students will be able to let their mind go free and relax as they enjoy an art and craft project each day. Daily projects involve ingenious activities, such as Asian watercolors, paper mache, clay work, 3D art, cake and cupcake decorating, sewing, wood work, bird houses, and scrapbooking. A visitor from Color Me Mine will come and do a pottery art project with them for the day. After two weeks of original work, we are ready for an art show!

SESSION 5 (August 12th – August 23rd): BACK TO SCHOOL REFRESHER CAMP

School is just around the corner! To get each student back in the groove, we have designed a 4 hours a day crash course on Language Arts and Mathematics. Students will learn while having fun! This refresher course will starts at 9:00AM and ends at 3:00PM, Monday through Thursday. From 3:00PM-6:00PM, they will engage in fun team sports, arts and crafts, and group games. Every Friday will be a field trip day. This camp will be a kick start to a memorable school year!

SESSION 6 (August 26th – 28th): LIFELONG SKILL/TEAM BUILDING

To prepare them for the new school year, the children will learn about themselves as an individual and as a team player. They will be involved in hands on activities and games that will empower them as leaders and followers. Along with this, they will develop their executive skills through various exercise, such as how to keep their desk clean or locker organized. This will help them start the new school year on a positive note!

SESSION 1 (June 17th – June 28th): Athletics Excellence!Week one of Session 1 will involve cross training, and week two will be athletic training. After two weeks of body conditioning, teambuilding, cross training, and spiritual gains, they can overcome any obstacles. The fun does not stop here; the children will participate in a wide range of on and off site entertaining activities, such as rock climbing and track and field. By the end of the two week experience, they will leave imploring for more!

SESSION 2 (July 1st – July 12th): Engineering and Science Camp

Have you ever wanted to build something, like a car, an airplane, or anything with your own hands? For the first week of this session, students can experience the art of designing and building. At school, they will be exposed to building and creating things through various materials, such as wood, Styrofoam, paper, or even Legos. After learning about construction, they will visit Tech Museum to develop an understanding for physical science, which will further enhance their understanding about building, designing, and creating. As for the second week of this session, they will explore their scientific curiosity into marine biology. Through creek explorations and science experiments, they develop an understanding for marine biology. After two weeks of engineering and science, we will discover who will be the next Nobel Prize Winner!

SESSION 3 (July 15th – July 26th): Outdoor Wilderness Camp

Are you ready for some fun in the wilderness? Like the show, Survival, in the first week of this camp, students will engage in archer adventure as the children get their arrows ready, take aim, and shoot away as they take exciting lessons from local field archery range within Santa Clara County. After archery, the students will hike the Steven Creeks Reservoirs, learning and exploring the outdoor wilderness: map reading, trail safety, and ecology. The following week will be filled with survival and camping skills. Students learn how to survive with what they have, and this skill will be put to test as they adventure out on a two days and one night camping trip at Castle Rock. Who will be the last one to survive?

SESSION 4 (July 29th – August 9th): Photography Camp

A photo is a moment in time. It can capture expression and express without using words. Students will learn about photography concepts and in turn apply these concepts toward current technology using various computer programs, such as Illustrator or Flash Adobe. This camp has been broken into two sessions: one week of colored photography in a natural setting and the other week is black and white photography. At each of these sessions, we will invite one professional photographer and one instructor from the Academy of Arts in SF to work with the children twice a week on the art of photography. Students will need a digital camera for this class since they will be taking plenty of pictures and using computer technology to bring them to life. Smile….you are on candid camera!
