Many of Monticello Academy’s taekwondo students participated in the Annual University of California Martial Arts Program’s UC Open, held April 29. The athletes were coached by the program’s head instructor, Mr. Jaffarzadeh, and asst. instructor Mr. Fluker.  The students worked hard throughout the year to test their skills in a competition environment and it certainly paid off.  Almost every student medaled and had excellent forms and sparring matches throughout the day.  Monticello’s taekwondo students learned many lessons including hard work, focus, humility, and the value of the indomitable spirit they train for that they utilize in their training, as well as every facet of their lives.  Congratulations Monticello Taekwondo!

The pursuit to create a virtual 3D experience can be dated back to the 1960’s when American filmmaker Morton Heilig successfully created one of the first VR machines, which he dubbed as the Sensorama Machine. The Sensorama machine used 3D film, stereo sound, smells, seat vibrations and wind to create the sensation of riding a super fast motorcycle.

Although this technology has been around for more than three decades, it has remained elusive due to inaccessibility and high costs, but thanks to companies like Google and evolution of technology, that’s all about to change!

Google Cardboard was introduced at the 2014 I/O Conference as the first affordable VR device in hopes to spark a worldwide interest in the possibilities that lie within virtual reality. Since these devices are made of cardboard they can be sold for as low as $7.00 making them accessible to

A wide range of customers, including schools.

Monticello Academy has always strived to stay on the cutting edge of education and technology.  With Arrash Jaffarzdeh, the director of Technology at the helm we’ve started what we hope is the beginning of our next great adventure, virtual reality (VR)!

For our first step into the world of VR, Google Representatives and researchers from SRI, visited the eighth grade science class of our Middle School science teacher, Alan Kahn and brought along with them the Google Expedition VR devices.  With a simple downloading of the proper app and their smartphones, students were able to embark on a virtual tour of southern Italy where they explored the effects of carbon dioxide on the ocean and the ocean’s wildlife.

“It was a lot like scuba diving” said student A. Ivanon who has real life scuba diving experience recording expeditions in Monterey and Hawaii.

Eighth grade student, G. Kompel was excited to describe her VR underwater experience, “We got to go under the water and look at the effects of the ocean’s acidity, we saw the water changing colors.”

Student S. Jain described how easy it was to assemble the device. “All we have to do is strap in our phones, once you know how to do it, it only takes about 10 seconds to set up.”

Our educational technology program is working to integrate more VR experiences for the students at the school.  We look forward to more VR adventures for the students, faculty, and perhaps someday even bring home a VR experience for Monticello Academy parents!  If you want to learn more about Virtual Reality and Google Expeditions, check out the links below or contact our director of educational technology, Arrash Jaffarzadeh.

Monticello Academy's FIRST Lego League robotics students participated at their first FLL qualifying tournament.  Using teamwork, collaboration, creativity, and a great deal of problem solving, the students programmed their robot to perform tasks and compete against many other robotics clubs.  This year's theme is Animal Allies.  FLL encourages students to think like scientists by researching and exploring many issues that currently face our world through FLL's Core Values.

It was a great first experience for out hard working students.  Congratulations to the students and their parents, and coach for making it such a great day and experience for the children!

SAT 10 ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE TEST

As of Tuesday, May 31 through Friday, June 3, every Monticello student will be participating in the standardized testing.  The testing practice is one way for us to measure your child’s academic performance.  For all Kindergarteners, they will be taking the SESAT 2 and 1st through Middle School will take the SAT 10.  All standardized tests are administered in the exact same way to hundreds of thousands of students across the country.  They are also referred to as norm-referenced tests.  Norms give educators a common standard of measurement of student’s skills and abilities across the country.  Students are ranked according to their test scores and then assigned a percentile ranking.  This ranking will tell us what percent of all students scored better or worse than the norm.  To help us better prepare your child for this testing process, here are some reminders:

1. For the week of Tuesday, May 31 - Friday, June 3, all students are required to wear uniform due to testing week.

2. Make sure that your child is not absent or late that week.

3. Monitor your child’s progress.

4. Be informed about the testing requirements by reviewing any pre-test materials that are given to your child from the teacher.

5. Make sure your child is getting the sleep and nutrition he or she needs to succeed.  Sleep early so your child will get enough sleep (at least 9 – 10 hours, by no later than 8:30p.m.).  A tired child will not be able to focus.

6. Do not forget to eat a healthy breakfast.  Food will help children think better.

7. Motivate your child to prepare.  Talk to them about the procedure and let them know what to expect after you have read your preview.

8. Nurture your child’s curiosity and desire to learn.

9. Avoid constantly talking about the test.

10. Remind them that there is no pass or fail.  It is an assessment of whether they understand what is being taught throughout the year.

11. Encourage your child to take the test very seriously but have healthy expectations and keep testing in perspective.

It is important to recognize that all national standardized achievement tests work essentially the same way.  The test will ask multiple choice questions, have specific time limits depending on the age, and compare your child’s results to the national average.  Most of all, it is only one measurement of your child’s academic performance ability.  If you have any concerns or questions, please let us know.

ATHLETIC UPDATES

We had an exciting and busy weekend on Saturday and Sunday.  Many of our Mustangs athletes competed in the traditional Bethel Meet in Cupertino where they competed against many local schools and track clubs.  We have been attending this track meet for several years now and our athletes have always enjoyed the friendly competition and warm spirits there every time we go.  A small group of Mustangs athletes also competed in the 3M Invitational in Union City this weekend where they competed against very high level competitors and track clubs.  It was a great experience for our athletes to see and compete against runners from all over the region; some as far as LA!  A special congratulations to Shreya Rao for earning Silver in the Girls High Jump event.  She is our first Monticello Mustang to win a medal at an AAU Track and Field Event.  We couldn't be more proud of everyone's hard work and effort.
