The pursuit to create a virtual 3D experience can be dated back to the 1960’s when American filmmaker Morton Heilig successfully created one of the first VR machines, which he dubbed as the Sensorama Machine. The Sensorama machine used 3D film, stereo sound, smells, seat vibrations and wind to create the sensation of riding a super fast motorcycle.

Although this technology has been around for more than three decades, it has remained elusive due to inaccessibility and high costs, but thanks to companies like Google and evolution of technology, that’s all about to change!

Google Cardboard was introduced at the 2014 I/O Conference as the first affordable VR device in hopes to spark a worldwide interest in the possibilities that lie within virtual reality. Since these devices are made of cardboard they can be sold for as low as $7.00 making them accessible to

A wide range of customers, including schools.

Monticello Academy has always strived to stay on the cutting edge of education and technology.  With Arrash Jaffarzdeh, the director of Technology at the helm we’ve started what we hope is the beginning of our next great adventure, virtual reality (VR)!

For our first step into the world of VR, Google Representatives and researchers from SRI, visited the eighth grade science class of our Middle School science teacher, Alan Kahn and brought along with them the Google Expedition VR devices.  With a simple downloading of the proper app and their smartphones, students were able to embark on a virtual tour of southern Italy where they explored the effects of carbon dioxide on the ocean and the ocean’s wildlife.

“It was a lot like scuba diving” said student A. Ivanon who has real life scuba diving experience recording expeditions in Monterey and Hawaii.

Eighth grade student, G. Kompel was excited to describe her VR underwater experience, “We got to go under the water and look at the effects of the ocean’s acidity, we saw the water changing colors.”

Student S. Jain described how easy it was to assemble the device. “All we have to do is strap in our phones, once you know how to do it, it only takes about 10 seconds to set up.”

Our educational technology program is working to integrate more VR experiences for the students at the school.  We look forward to more VR adventures for the students, faculty, and perhaps someday even bring home a VR experience for Monticello Academy parents!  If you want to learn more about Virtual Reality and Google Expeditions, check out the links below or contact our director of educational technology, Arrash Jaffarzadeh.
